GRANTS PASS, Oregon (AP) -- A man who demanded a Whopper at knifepoint didn't have it his way at Burger King.

According to police, a man in shorts, thong sandals and a multicolored beret leaped on the front counter, pulled out a knife and announced to a clerk: "I'll have a Whopper with cheese, and don't say anything."

When the frightened clerk simply retreated to the back of the kitchen, the man jumped over the counter and tried to open the cash register.

When it wouldn't open, he became agitated and ran out the front door, losing both his sandals on the way.

Police spotted the barefoot suspect a short time later Thursday night. They said he appeared intoxicated.

On Friday, James Craig Smith, 41, was cooling his heels in jail, charged with robbery and a probation violation. Previous convictions include domestic assault, menacing, disorderly conduct and drunken driving, court records show.
